Dr. Tom Iwashita, DC

Doctor of Chiropractic

Dr. Tom Iwashita is a Southern California native. He grew up in Cypress and attended Swain elementary, Lexington junior high, and Cypress high school before before graduating from USC. He started playing baseball and basketball in the SEYO leagues at the age of 5, and continued playing youth sports in little league, pony, junior high, and high school. While at Lexington, after waking up with a stiff neck, his father took him to get his first chiropractic adjustment. Through several injuries he suffered in high school, he became very interested in the world of athletic training. He stopped playing Cypress sports after his Sophomore year to devote his time to working in the Athletic Training Room (ATR). At graduation, he was awarded a Lifetime Athletic Pass for his contribution to the Athletic Department. Now, close to forty years later, Dr. Tom continues to combined these two facets of his life together for the benefit of athletes, both young and not so young.

He graduated with Dr. Halverson from The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC). With a business administration and a management/leadership background, Dr Tom served on planning committees and the WASC accreditation team while at LACC. He also served in ASB, and represented the school at three national volleyball tournaments, collecting two Silver Medal finishes while serving as a co-captain. Academically, his name was found sporadically on the Dean’s List. At graduation, LACC President Dr. Reed Phillips presented Dr. Tom with the President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership.

Training Chiropractic Interns and Students has recently taken up a lot of Dr. Tom’s time. The clinic currently has agreements with The Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS) to offer internship and observation credits for several of their Community and Professional based programs. For the benefit of the SCUHS students, our clinic participates in SFO, BFE, CBI, PPR, and Postceptership programs. With California State University Fullerton, the clinic participates in a 140 hour community internship program (CICE) within the Kinesiology department for credit. For each of these programs, Dr. Tom has created syllibi, and developed lectures, training manuals, and modules.

Dr. Tom is also the creator of the Tri-Metrix program. It is an evolving tool within the clinical treatment paradigm. He credits each member of the staff, visiting professionals, and the revolving interns with contributing new expertise into the tool. In addition to treating the patient, Dr. Tom believes in coaching them through the program.

Dr. Tom stays athletically active and can be seen weekly in local basketball and volleyball leagues. He also participates in the clinic Yoga class, and works out in the clinic in the evenings. He has worked with numerous charitable organizations, sits on boards of non-profits, and volunteers for events like the Avon 3-day breast cancer walk and Susan G. Komen 3-day walk as a crew chiropractor.

Dr. Tom has other interests outside sports. He co founded a worker’s compensation consulting company called Proof Positive Consulting Consortium. This company creates and man’s light duty work stations for large employers to combat TTD. He also enjoys going to FT-3 range, where he is a member.

Doctor of Chiropractic

Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians

Dr. Roni Matsumoto is a local kid from Southern California. She went to Mayfair High School where she was a member of the Women’s Soccer team that held 4 consecutive League Championship Titles and one CIF Championship Title. While there she was named to the All-League Academic Team, and Second Team All-League. She played club out of Palos Verdes for Fram Soccer Club. She went on to the University of the Pacific where she was a member of the NCAA Div. I Women’s Soccer Team all four years. There she earned honors as a Jewish All-American for the 2002 season and was nominated as an NCAA Academic All-American. She has traveled internationally and played in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Sweden, and Mexico. She briefly played for an independent professional women’s soccer team. Throughout her athletic career she faced a number of injuries requiring reconstructive surgery and extensive rehabilitation. Her exposure and passion for Sports Medicine, and Sports Chiropractic, specifically, started when she was 11 with an ankle injury. Her first visit to a Sports Chiropractor would be all she would need to decide that was what she wanted to do “when she grew up”. She followed that Chiropractor around from the time she was 11, paid attention and asked A LOT of questions through all her own injuries and rehab, and began working on patients herself, during her summer breaks at the age of 18. She is a firm believer Sports Chiropractic was what kept her on the field, and when she was injured, it got her back onto the field.

She has been an active member in the community lending her expertise on the soccer field as both a coach and trainer. She has also participated in mentoring young adults and athletes. She played for an independent women’s soccer team for 2 years and although she no longer plays at that level, she still currently plays for a competitive recreational team.

Her post-graduate work included studying under top doctors in the field of orthopedics, neurology, physiatry, pain management, and chiropractic in an effort to become a board-certified chiropractic sports medicine physician (DACBSP). She will be starting courses in 2019 to become certified in Webster Technique and Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization Rehab to add additional treatments for the patients at The Athlete’s Advantage.

She has provided services to a number of different organizations and has worked at a number of different events including: St. Paul High School training room, Mayfair High School Football, served as a team doctor for the Long Beach Armada Baseball Team, Manny Mota Celebrity Golf Tournament, LAPD Celebrity Golf Tournament, Drew Brees Celebrity Golf Tournament, L.A. Derby Dolls, and has prepared athletes for events such as The World Track Championships, NFL Combines, NHL tryouts, the Olympics, the pro and amateur beach volleyball circuit, and USA Beach Volleyball. She currently works as a team doctor for both Cypress Community College, Garden Grove High School Football, and St. John Bosco Football.

Outside of the sports world, she has worked with a variety of companies designing illness, injury, and prevention programs, along with giving health talks to both employees and employers on work and lifestyle wellness. She is also a supervising clinician for Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS) and has been working with interns for the last 6 years in the El Camino College Student Health Center.
